About The Photographer,
Tommy McCollum
If you have spent much time at all around the Madison area, you have probably crossed paths with Tommy McCollum. Tommy is a Rockingham County native and one of the biggest race fans that you will ever meet. Tommy's interest in racing goes back almost 50 years till the time he saw his very first race car. It doesn't matter if it's paved track or dirt track racing, he's still a fan. As a kid he began building model race cars and kept up the tradition through the years. He has built model race cars for about every driver that you can think of, back to the time that stock cars were "real stock" cars right off the showroom floor.
As a huge race fan, he was always taking pictures of the cars & drivers. His reputation took off as the "Official Race Photographer". With 311 Speedway being right next to Madison, Tommy has spent about every Saturday night there since the early 1990's as the official track photographer. He also spent several years as the track photographer at Oak Level Raceway in Virginia. In 2007, Tommy became the photographer for Rolling Thunder Raceway in Ararat, Virginia. During his spare time on Sundays, he even covered the NASCAR races for the Madison Messenger on a part time basis. If you are looking for pictures from any race at 311 Speedway or Oak Level Raceway, he is the man to see.
Tommy McCollum is not just a race track photographer. In fact he is a man that wears many different hats. He has been a firefighter with the Madison Fire Department for over 30 years and a member of the Masons for 36 years. During the weekdays, Tommy can be seen creating graphics at Mr. Promotions (Dick's Store) in downtown Madison. In the evenings you may recognize him at the Madison K-Mart wearing one of the red vests and his cap. And of course you can find him at the track on the weekend wearing the hat of a photographer with Tommy's Racing Photos on it.
